Palmer School of Chiropractic Awards
While many colleges and universities across America contribute scholarships to Miss America contestants at all levels of competition, Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa is the only school to offer full tuition scholarships to any Miss America state representative. The Palmer College is the largest and oldest chiropractic college in the world, founded in 1897. The scholarships were first made available in 1991, thanks to the efforts of the Vice President of the Palmer International Alumni Association, Dr. Ken Murkowski. As a Miss Iowa judge, he was deeply impressed with the Miss America program, and established an arrangement which would offer full tuition to any Miss America contestant. The first to take advantage was Miss Massachusetts 1992 Lisa DeRoches, a Miss America Top Five Finalist, who is now a Doctor of Chiropractic practicing in Ohio.
The present scholarship totals approximately $50,000 per scholarship winner.
The scholarship is in-kind and is being handled by Palmer.
Women must compete in Atlantic City as state representatives and must have completed the specific undergraduate science requirements to apply for admission. Women are encouraged to contact Palmer before their year of service ends. Other Miss America participants are also offered tuition considerations. These include women who competed in any state competition, but did not win a state title, as well as women who have competed at nationals since 1991 and are considering a career change or upgrade.
Interested women may contact Dr. Ken Murkowski for additional information at (517) 784-9123. Or they may write to Palmer College of Chiropractic, 1000 Brady Street, Davenport, IA 52803.
