SCHOLARSHIP FACTS
Miss America 1945, Bess Myerson, received the first scholarship award of $5,000. Within one year, the Miss America scholarship fund grew to $25,000, with the grants shared by Miss America and 16 of the national finalists.
By 1947, Miss America state and local competitions were establishing their own scholarship funds by collecting grants from individuals, colleges, universities and corporations.
Five scholarship funds are available to women who have competed at any level of competition but do not need to have won their local or state titles. They include the Dr. and Mrs. David B. Allman Medical Scholarships, Albert A. Marks Jr. Scholarships for Teacher Education, for women wishing to complete a master’s degree or postgraduate studies in fields related to education, Eugenia Vellner Fischer Award for Performing Arts, and Leonard C. Horn Award for Legal Studies.
As part of more than $1 million that the Miss America Organization committed to state and local programs in 2005, two $1,000 scholarships were made available to each state organization. The State Community Service Scholarship was awarded to the young woman in each state demonstrating exemplary participation in community service. The Miss State Scholar award was granted to the state-level contestant who showed excellence in the classroom.
The Miss America Organization allocates up to $102,000 in Miss America Starter Scholarships to help in the development of up to four new locals in each state and the District of Columbia per year.
