Social Impact Initiative: STEAM is a natural progression towards a more holistic educational model that integrates the arts into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as an additional access point to develop student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking skills. By giving students, especially young women, exposure to STEAM education, we can go full STEAM ahead in preparing them to become the innovators of the future.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Growing up, my aunt always told me “if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room”. As a child, I thought that sounded ridiculous, as I strived to be the most intelligent, the most knowledgeable. Now, I know that she meant for me to be humble and to learn as much as I can from others. There are so many lessons that can only come with life experience, and people are usually willing to share if you are willing to listen. With the job of Miss Michigan, I have truly embraced this advice and I try my best to learn from people around me each and every day. I am so grateful for the opportunity to travel the state of Michigan and meet people I would never interact with otherwise, and I have gained a much more profound awareness of the world around me.
