Nia Franklin, Miss America 2019, Joins Local NYC School for Holiday Show

NEW YORK, NY (December 22, 2018) – Nia Franklin, Miss America 2019 and arts education advocate, greeted approximately 200 students of PS/IS 18 on their way into school Friday morning in Washington Heights.

Throughout the visit with PS/IS 18, Franklin welcomed students to school and later used her Miss America talent to join their school holiday showcase where each classroom had the opportunity to perform for their peers and family members. Franklin sang with the students and also performed “This Christmas” by artist Donny Hathaway.

“Because festive music surrounds us this time of year, the holidays can be one of the best times to introduce young minds to joy of the arts,” said Nia Franklin. “Singing with the students at PS/IS 18  today warmed my heart. It’s a blessing to be able to use the talent that I have been given to positively impact young minds in New York City and across America.”

Visiting with students across the country is just one part of Franklin’s new job. As an arts education advocate, Franklin has worked with the likes of Lincoln Center, ASCAP  and Julliard to bring attention to the need for more arts education in schools. In addition, Franklin is the national ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and serves as a partner for Sing for Hope, an international organization.

“As the holidays approach, it’s easy for all of us to get caught up in gifts and material things. I encourage everyone to remember that sometimes the greatest gifts don’t cost much at all. The kids at PS/IS 18 were proof that music can be one of the greatest gifts.”
