Miss America Establish Scholarship For Atlantic City Youth

Expands Its Reach to Provide Financial Aid to Deserving Young Women
Not Otherwise Participating in the Miss America Program
The Miss America Foundation announced today the establishment of the “Miss America Sisterhood Scholarship.” The scholarship, funded by previous Miss Americas, will be awarded to deserving young women not otherwise participating in the Miss America program. The first Miss America Sisterhood Scholarship will be awarded to a young woman in her senior year at Atlantic City High School based on proven academic achievement, community service and an essay.
Suzette Charles, Miss America 1984, and the Atlantic City liaison to the Board of the Miss America Organization, led the initiative to establish the scholarship through the Miss America Foundation. Ms. Charles was also a student in Atlantic City.
“The Miss America Organization helped me by providing quality scholarship assistance and I wanted to pass that along and empower a young woman to pursue her academic goals. By creating this scholarship opportunity, the Miss America Sisterhood hopes to encourage success and support of young women in the local community and beyond,” said Charles.
Newly appointed chair of the Miss America Foundation Board of Trustees, Marjorie Vincent-Tripp, is thrilled to continue to expand the reach of the Foundation.
“Part of my goal as the newly-appointed chair of the Miss America Foundation is to expand the foundation’s mission of funding scholars to encompass young women who are accomplished and talented, yet may not have participated in the Miss America Program,” said Vincent-Tripp. “This is a wonderful first step towards accomplishing that goal. And it’s an opportunity to give back to a community that has supported Miss America for decades.”
The Miss America Organization, a 501(c) (4), is one of the most recognizable household names in America working to empower young women through education and service. The Miss America Organization is comprised of 51 licensed state organizations, including all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Miss America candidates contribute tens of thousands of community service hours annually and have raised over $17 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Miss America scholarships since 2007.
